Before we jump into the storing process, make sure we have the right tools. You don’t need to do much in order to store LiPo batteries. You’ll only need some things that’ll keep the batteries intact. These tools will also protect the battery from fire.
You must have these tools in order to store the batteries. Otherwise, your LiPo batteries will have possible ignition. Here’s a list of the things you’ll need for this operation-

- Balance charger/Discharger
- LiPo storage bag
- Fireproof container
- Sandbag [optional]
If you have all the required tools, we can begin with the storing process. In order to store LiPo batteries, you need to follow some simple steps. So, take your tools and follow along-
Step 1: Read The Voltage Of The Battery
When storing LiPo batteries, their charge level must be in the resting phase. Which is 3.8V. However, it can be within the range of 3.6-3.8V.
In order to know the voltage level, you need to measure the battery. And you can do that using a volt reader or a voltmeter.
Voltmeters are an absolute essential. Especially if you’re dealing with LiPo batteries. If you need one, there are many voltmeters to choose from.

Now almost all LiPo batteries come with a volt reader. And you can easily check the present voltage level. By checking the voltage, you’ll be able to decide if you have to charge it or not.
It might be that your LiPo battery didn’t come with a volt reader. For that, you need to use a voltage meter/voltmeter. Using a voltmeter can be a bit tricky and confusing. Make sure you have all the precautions necessary.
For using a voltmeter what you have to do is-
First, put the LiPo battery in the balancer. Hold the positive end of the voltmeter. And connect it with the other end of the balance plug. Similarly, take the negative end and connect it with the opposite plug. Hold both the plugs until the voltmeter gives a reading on the screen.

Step 2: Charge The Battery To Resting Charge

Your charger might not have any storage settings. Then you have no other option. You have to bring the battery to the resting charge manually.
If your battery charge was lower than 3.8V, you have to simply charge it. The battery has to be charged until it’s at the resting level. Make sure you don’t overcharge it. If you do, you have to discharge the battery.
Now, there is a possibility that your battery has a charge lower than 3.8V. In that case, you have to discharge the LiPo battery. And for that, you have to use your charger again. Discharge until your battery is at the resting level.
Your charger doesn’t have the discharge option? Don’t worry!
There are other plausible ways to bring the voltage level down. For example, if your camera has a LiPo battery. And it’s charged more than 3.8V. Then you can simply use the camera a little until the battery level is down. Usually, a LiPo stops working at 3.2 V.
Once the voltage is down, you can charge it again up to 3.8V. And you’ll finally have a battery that can be stored.
Make sure you get the right voltage level. Because storing the battery with too much high or low voltage is risky. Overcharged batteries build pressure inside and rupture. On the other hand, undercharged batteries produce hydrogen gasses and get swollen. So you will not be able to use it anymore.

Fireproof containers are mostly made of metal or ceramic. But we prefer using metals. Also, it’s better not to keep flammable materials around the lead or lining. Such as felt or fabric. You also need to keep in mind that the container needs to be able to seal.
For extra measures, it’s safe to keep a sandbag over the wrapped battery. You might be wondering why-
